Sherbet

Last week we had a task to conduct an experiment. My group chose to do sherbet. It didn’t really work out but it did taste alright. Here’s the recipe we used.

You will need

  • Icing sugar
  • Citric acid
  • Bicarbonate soda
  • Flavoured jelly crystals
  • A teaspoon
  • A dessert spoon
  • A small mixing bowl
  • A container or bag to keep you sherbet in (unless you eat it all at once)

What to do

  1. Add 1 level teaspoon of citric acid crystals to the bowl.
  2. Add 1 level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the bowl.
  3. Now add 3 heaped dessert spoons of icing sugar.
  4. Add at least 2 level dessert spoons of jelly crystals (or more to taste).
  5. Place a small amount, about half a teaspoon on your tongue.
  6. After tasting you may need to vary the ingredients. If it is too bitter add more sugar, if there isn’t enough fizz you may need to add either bicarbonate soda or citric acid. Make sure you add only in small amounts, remember you can always add more but it is very hard to remove some.

What’s happening?

You have just created an acid-base reaction in your mouth. When you combine an acid (in this activity the citric acid) and an alkaline (the bicarbonate soda) with saliva they mix together to create a gas in the form of lots of tiny bubbles. This is called an acid-based reaction and it’s what gives sherbet its fizz. You are actually feeling the sensation of carbon dioxide bubbles on your tongue. These are the same bubbles that are in fizzy drinks.

The icing sugar is needed to add sweetness as the citric acid and bicarbonate soda are quite sour. Citric acid is one of the acids found in lemons, oranges and limes. That is why they are called ‘citric fruit’. The other acid in lemons and other citric fruit is called ascorbic acid. This is commonly known as vitamin C.

The jelly crystals add flavour.

Don Bradman!

October 24, 2011 Posted 5:20am10

In term 3 2011 all the year six’s  in the Torrens building  had a book to read throughout the whole term.  The book that we had to read was called “Our Don Bradman. A diary of Victor McDonald.”

This book is about a young boy called  Victor McDonald. Victor receives a diary for his twelfth birthday in January 1932 and records factual events as well as telling the story of his family. Victor McDonald is cricket mad. He even has a whole  scrapbook all about Don Bradman. Victor and his family lived in Newcastle until his dad lost his job. The whole family of 5 (two girls, Victor and Mum and Dad,) move to Sydney  to live with his aunt and uncle. He has to put up with his uncle who is major a drinker . His uncle also supports the new guard, (a big group whole doesn’t like Mr. Lang, who is the premiere of Sydney).  Victor’s father manages to get a job as a reporter for “The Sun” (Newspaper), a job which brings in enough money which allows them to keep paying the mortgage fee.

In the diary it reveals historical dates in this timeline like the opening of the Harbour Bridge, the political unrest with the new guard and Phar Lap’s American win.

This book reveals some great information and makes you want to keep on reading.

I would recommend this book to a person who likes reading diaries and history. If you could read this book any where I would like to be in a nice quiet room on a nice red beanbag.

Thank’s, Yogibear.

Horrible Histories!

September 7, 2011 Posted 5:20am09

For homework this weeek we have to recommend a book that we have read.

I can not decide on one of my favourite books so I have chosen the Horrible Histories Series. I think they are great books to read. I would personaly recommend this to anyone who likes humor and history. But beware, these books do have a little bit of blood and guts every now and then. They also tell you the stuff that your history teachers don’t tell you in school.

There is also different series that I would recommend including, Horrible Science, Dead famous, Murderous Maths and Horrible Geography.

Some of my most favourite books I have read in the Horrible Histories series are, The Slimy Stuarts, England, The Awesome Egyptians and The Terrible Tudors.

Bye, Yogibear.

Book Week Parade!

August 24, 2011 Posted 5:20am08

On Thursday 18th of August our school celebrated 2011 Book Week with a parade. We get to dress up as a book character or dress up in the Book Week theme of One World many Stories. One of my friends Kerky and me decides to dress up as Gypsies. We had all of the bangles and every thing. My friends dressed up in really cool costumes too. J-lo and Lamo JR were two peas in a pod, L-plater was cat in a hat, Mawy was a netball player, Waffle was also a Gypsy and my brother BJ was a policeman.

For the Parade we go into the gym and sit in our class groups. Once our classroom is called we all stand up and walk around the gym high fiving every one else’s hand from other class rooms. Two of my most favourite costumes were from two of the teachers. They dressed up as Sonic and Mario.

Also in the day we went to our well-being groups to read a book called Mirror. Page by page it shows you two very different family lifestyles, one in Sydney, Australia . The other in a remote village in Morocco, North Africa. Its very different how on one side of the page it has Sydney and on the other it shows Morocco. But over all its a great book.

After that we had to colour in a picture of a hand sewn carpet. I got to work with one of the junior primary kids.

It was really fun to be able to dress up with our friends and to also be creative on what we wear. We definatly all have a  good time and we always look forward to Book Week every year.

For this weeks Inquiry homework task we had to write who we think has contributed to the development of Australia. We also had to ask our mum or dad this question. My mum said………

Science- William and Lawrence Bragg (Father and Son): They developed X-ray technology

Health science- Professor Ian Frazer and his team at the University of Queensland developed the vaccine for Cervical Cancer. This success justifies the funding given by the Government and University. It also ensures future funding for continuing research.

Sport- Pat Cash, Pat Rafter, Evonne Goolagong Cawley & Sam Stosar have all contributed to the development of Australian tennis. This come about from their success of the highest level. Success inspires children to take up the sport resulting in pressure on Government of the time to increase funding. This funding helps train coaches at a higher level. Evonne Goolagong Cawley was the first female Indigenous Australian to win a major tennis title.

Arts- Hans Heysen, Pro Hart, Sidney Nolan. Success of these painters has raised the profile of art in Australia and of Australian artists overseas.

And I said……..

Sport:

Sir Donald Bradman (Cricket) – He has bought joy and pride to this country. He was a major cricket idol for kids at the time and still one today.

Lleyton Hewitt (Tennis) – He has shown the joy of tennis to kids and adults. This is why he is my idol. He has also won grand slam titles.

 Art:

Hans Heysen (Artist) – He lived in Germany with his family until he seven and then immigrated to Australia. In 1908 Han Heysen and his wife and kids moved to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Hans is especially famous for his paintings. One of Hans’s famous paintings is called “Droving into the light.”

There have been some awesome people in Australia that we can look up to and learn from.

Books in the Future!

April 10, 2011 Posted 5:20am04

Technology has increased a lot since when books were first made. Now you can buy e-bo0k versions of book that you can read, on I-pad’s, I-phone’s and on PC’s. The advantages of these are:

  • Instead of buying a paper version book you can buy a non-paper book which saves trees
  •  They don’t take up so much space at home
  • You can enlarge the print if you have bad eyesight
  •  There maybe bonus features included with the electric form like: interviews with the author or illustrator

I think book’s will still be around but there won’t be as many as before! There will always be people who will prefer the paper book instead of the computer book.

My Inquiry Goal

February 24, 2011 Posted 5:20am02

My goal is to do all of my homework in time, try not to wait till the last minute and till mum has to nag me to do it!

Some ways to achieve this goal is to:

  • Do my homework spread out through the week so I get it done
  • I can do that by doing a little bit each night
  • Do my homework straight after school so I don’t forget it and not get tired
  • Do the hardest task first so I can get it over and done with
  • Ask mum or teacher for help if needed before the end of the fortnight

Thank’s, Yogi!
